At St Michael’s CE Primary we use the Kapow Primary Design and Technology Scheme of Work. The curriculum is based around four key themes:
- Design
- Make
- Evaluate
- Technical Knowledge
These key themes run through the six key areas of the scheme of work:
- Cooking and nutrition
- Mechanisms/Mechanical systems
- Electrical systems
- Digital world
- Structures
- Textiles
This is a spiral curriculum. These six areas are revisited again and again with increasing complexity, allowing learners to build on their previous learning. Electrical systems and Digital world begin in KS2. Through the scheme, learners respond to design briefs and scenarios that require consideration of the needs of others, developing their skills in these six key themes. Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work.
