Accidents & Illnesses

At St. Michael’s we have several staff who are qualified First Aiders including 2 staff members who are quailified Paediatric First Aiders.

Accidents

If a child sustains an accident at school, the following procedure takes place:

If the accident is minor, the appropriate first aid is administered and the child returns to class.

If it is thought that the accident is more serious, parents or carers are contacted. If the accident warrants it, and the parent cannot be contacted, the Headteacher would assume responsibility for the child and an ambulance may be called.

If a child received a bump to the head, a letter is sent home with him/her alerting parents and carers to the possibility of delayed reactions.

All accidents are recorded in a log book.

Illnesses

If a child is taken ill at school, parents are contacted with a view to him/her being taken home. It is most important that we are informed of any change of address or telephone numbers – it is essential that this information is kept up to date so that contact can be made in an emergency.

If a child is sick or has diarrhoea, they are required to stay off school for 48 hours after the last incident occured.

To help you decide if your child needs to be off school due to illness, please see the guidance below:
