At St Michael’s we use the White Rose Primary Science Curriculum, which aims to develop children’s curiosity and appreciation for the world around them. It is our aim that children leave St Michael’s with the skills, knowledge and understanding to make sense of the world as well as an appreciation and respect for living organisms and the natural environment. We believe that science learning promotes positive attitudes and that through scientific exploration, enquiry, investigation and innovation, humans have the ability to make a positive change for the future of our world.
Throughout the programmes of study for science, the children will acquire key knowledge and skills that progresses from early years to KS2 in accordance with NC expectations. The curriculum is designed to ensure that children are able to acquire key scientific knowledge through practical experiences; using equipment, conducting investigations, building arguments and explaining concepts knowledgeably.
Opportunities for cross curricular learning are identified and planned for to ensure the curriculum is relevant and that children can make links with other subject areas thus ensuring learning is remembered. Opportunities to further enhance their experiences of scientific ideas will be promoted through learning opportunities in specialist settings or through workshops in school. Children are expected to work collaboratively in science and to apply their reading, writing and speaking skills to raise questions and make observations. They are expected to use their mathematical skills to interpret and record observations made. Through our questioning curriculum children value the importance of answering and asking questions and enjoy science as a subject that enhances imagination and curiosity..
