Computers and computing are fundamental to many aspects of our day to day lives and employability. In order that learners can understand and appreciate the logic, complexities and applications of computing and computer science they need access to a dynamic, progressive and current computing curriculum. At St Michael’s CE Primary School we teach the concepts behind computers and computing from the Early Years through to Year 6. Throughout their primary school career learners will study a wide ranging computing curriculum which encompasses: online safety, digital literacy, computational thinking, physical computers and associated hardware, and coding; all this is completed in discrete Computing lessons, with cross-curricular application when appropriate. It is our intention that learners leave primary school equipped with a good understanding of basic computer science, its fundamental role in how our world works and a range of skills that enable them to be able to utilise technology to their benefit throughout their educational and working lives. |
St Michael’s uses the Kapow Primary Scheme of Work. The scheme is categorized into five key areas, creating a cyclical route through the scheme which learners can develop their computing knowledge by revisiting and building on previous learning:
- Computing systems and networks
- Programming
- Creating media
- Data handling
- Online safety
The implementation of the scheme ensures a broad and balanced coverage of the National Curriculum requirements, using Skills Showcase units to provide learners with opportunities to learn and apply transferable skills.
