At St Michael’s Church of England Primary School we believe the principle aim of religious education is to explore what people believe and the difference this makes to their daily lives. Children gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.
At St Michael’s, we follow Understanding Christianity. This resource supports pupils in developing their understanding of the world and their own experience within it. It does this by integrating children’s understanding of significant theological concepts within Christianity with their own self-understanding and understanding of the world, as part of their wider religious literacy.
We also follow the agreed syllabus for RE, Faith and Belief in the 21st Century, which was revised and introduced in East Sussex in 2022. This resource supports children in making sense of and understanding the significance of religious and non-religious beliefs.
The children at St Michael’s are encouraged to reflect on the concepts and questions studied. They are able to challenge the ideas studied and articulate their own beliefs in an environment of respect underpinned by our core Christian value. We ask them to make connections, make sense of beliefs and concepts and understand the impact of how and why people put their beliefs into action.
